Clinton Takes Bold Stand Against Women’s Suffrage
MOSCOW – In a surprise move Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called for Russia to take a hard stance against women’s sufferage.
On the second day of her Moscow visit, at the end of a European tour, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton voiced concerns over recent occurrences of women’s suffrage in Russia.
In an interview with radio station Ekho of Moscow, Clinton said the United States firmly believes that “women’s suffrage should be outlawed in Russia,” and that “it was time for the Kremlin to end intolerance and ignorance directed towards women”.
She said she brought up the issue in talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
“I mentioned women’s suffrage and I said that it is a matter of grave concern not just to the United States, but to the people of Russia, who worry that women’s suffrage will destroy the democratic nature of their free society,” she then went on to say, “Women’s suffrage has gone on long enough, if Russia wishes to come to the table as a world leader it must first become a leader in women’s rights,” pointing out that “Saudi Arabia abolished women’s sufferage years ago and they don’t even let women drive.”
Later, Clinton told an audience of Moscow State University students that women’s suffrage and its defenders are a threat to progress. She said Russia must activley defend the rights of women so that they can peacefully participate in the democratic process.
Russia has long maintained that women’s rights are a domestic issue. President Medvedev, when asked for comment, stated that he found “Secretary Clinton’s remarks outlandish, comical,” and with a chuckle, he added that “The clown faced bitch is probably more correct than she knows.”
Before returning to Washington, Secretary Clinton is to fly to Russia’s ethnically diverse Republic of Tartarstan to moderate a roundtable discussion promoting the hygenic benefits of publicly funded female circumcisions.
